Imagine hearing the words "your child has cancer." For Erin's mom and dad, and thousands of parents every day, those words are a horrible reality.
At 8 years old, a tumor had amassed behind Erin's right eye (optic nerve meningioma). Just a short time later, when she was only 14, Erin underwent a frontal temporal craniotomy to remove the tumor. While the tumor removal surgery was a success, she was left permanently and completely blind in her right eye.
Cancer was now part of her life – a life that would require constant monitoring. In 2002 a residual tumor appeared, and again, more surgery and radiation. For awhile life was normal (her new normal), but in 2014 her world crashed down once more, as she learned a new tumor had begun growing behind her left optic nerve – her only good eye. At this point, Erin knows the drill and the odds. Once again, she underwent surgery to remove the tumor. This time the surgery only took "part" of her vision – a small victory in Erin's world.
Erin can not control her cancer, but she can control how she fights back. She is driven by HOPE, and is a beacon of light to all that know her. Through all the setbacks, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a school teacher and in 2004 married her sweetheart, Pete.
In her spare time, Erin dedicates her life to helping young kids faced with the same life-altering diagnosis that robbed her of her youth – pediatric cancer. Erin volunteers for the Children's Cancer Center and 1Voice Foundation helping countless families and children in the Tampa Bay area. Just recently, she was honored by the Tampa Bay Lightning as the 16th Lightning Community Hero of the 2016-2017 season (see video here). She received a check for $50,000 that she donated to the 1Voice Foundation.
Update: June 5, 2017. Erin is learning to live as a blind person while still battling cancer.
Today, Thurs, Jan. 5, 2017, 11:17 am. As I sit typing this, Erin is heading back into the hospital for yet another round of chemo. A new more aggressive tumor is growing. Will she be completely blind? She doesn't know, but the odds are not good. No matter what she still has HOPE. We all have hope. Without HOPE what do we all have...
Erin and her husband have been dogged by medical bills their entire lives, and this recent diagnosis has forced Erin to take a leave of absence from work – the work she loves so dearly.
$5 of every "as for me, I will always have HOPE" CharityRagg will go directly toward her medical expenses. Decorate your kitchen, or give the perfect's V-Day gift, while helping a beautiful soul at the same time. You can also donate directly to Erin's GO FUND ME PAGE here, HOPE FOR ERIN.
